I had an item for sale which didn't sell. A week later someone contacted me and asked me if I'd sell it, which I was pleased to do, put it back on as an auction, he bid and won. All good.

He's now emailed me and asked me to send the item to a different address. I don't think this is a good idea as surely I wouldn't be covered by PayPal? does anyone know? Do I have to cancel the sale until he changes it in PayPal?

I wouldn't. Tell him you're unable to do that.

SausageSoda · 05/12/2016 12:46

I think if he's paying via PayPal he can change the address he wants it delivered to that way. If he changes the delivery address via PayPal I don't see an issue. I wouldn't do it otherwise

Don't do it OP.

I had this once and buyer did update her address on PayPal but was a hassle

HeyRoly · 05/12/2016 12:51

This happened to me once. I had a message from the winner saying they were bidding on behalf of a friend who lived in Germany and could I post there?

Bearing in mind I had buyer restrictions in place so non-UK bidders couldn't bid, I thought they had a bloody cheek.

Anyway, I did, against my better judgement, and sent it tracked delivery at their expense. Then they had the cheek to give me neutral feedback and said they were surprised it arrived undamaged because it was so poorly packaged Angry It was a necklace wrapped in bubble wrap, inside a padded envelope!

I blocked them and vowed to never do a buyer a favour ever again. So I recommend you don't.

What's the value of the item? Were you going to send it recorded anyway? If yes, then no, don't send to an alternative address - inform them that to maintain your seller protection you must send it to the address accompanying the PayPal payment. Offer to refund them so they can repay and edit the delivery address.

If it's a low value item that you weren't going to send tracked, then it doesn't matter either way and there's no harm in changing the address.

QueenMortificado · 05/12/2016 14:13

Thank you team, it's a coat which is £22 so not a massively valuable item but not worth the hassle

I've asked him to change his address on PayPal. If he does this, do I then have to cancel the transaction and he pays again? Or is it ok?

Sorry, just seen I'll need to refund it and then him pay again

It's not even the same name he's given me as it is on the address on eBay. I smell a rat!

I've bought things from ebay and had them posted to a different address in a different name.

It was when a friend of mine had her PayPal suspended. It wasn't hard, just filled in the delivery name and address in PayPal. Doubt the seller even knew

GinAndTunic · 05/12/2016 14:26

I've done that when I wanted a seller to send an item to my tenant, rather than to me, when it was a household item. I am a long-time eBayer with 100% positive feedback so it's never been an issue.

HeavenlyEyes · 05/12/2016 17:19

you must only send to the address Paypal tell you to - if the buyer is genuine they won't mind you refunding and then they can re-pay properly after updating the delivery address in their Paypal account. Either way I would definitely send tracked if I were you and upload the tracking info to the eBay transaction upon dispatch too.
