Paypal payment taken automatically - is this right?

I've just bought 2 very cheap items on eBay.

Cost 99p and £1.99, free postage. Buy it Now.

I was a bit surprised when the payment was automatically taken from my Paypal account without asking me for authorisation first, or sending a code to my phone, which is what usually happens.

Is this normal? Maybe because it's below a certain limit? I've never bought anything this cheap on eBay before!

Have you authorised this in your eBay account? There's a setting that let's it pay automatically if you win.

If not, I'd be worried.

Not aware of having authorised it, no.
How would i have done that?

Normally when i buy stuff on eBay I have to login to paypal & get a code on my phone.

But as I say, items are very cheap ...

Never heard of a code to your phone. Did you click on pay now?

I have been having problems with Paypal for the past couple of days. DH has an account that has no money in and I was able to log in OK. We have a business account with money in and I have not been able to log in to that one. It asks me to verify my number and tries sending a code to my phone (this is definitely new to me) but it's not working.

I think they are having some big problems as I found a forum/site with many people complaining of log in problems or not being able to pay for goods despite knowing they have money in their Paypal accounts. I am going to try calling them on Monday as I need to transfer some money out of the account.

Did not need to click on pay now.

Just clicked on buy it now on eBay, & payment was automatically taken from paypal without even redirecting me to paypal.

Normally I have to log on to paypal, & then get an authorisation code via my phone (my paypal account was once hacked so is et up an extra level of security).

Not too worried as only have a few £ in there at the moment.

But still it was strange.
