Had a message from another seller threatening to report me to 'Tax Authority'

I've been selling on Ebay since 2013, I opted out of international sales and only sell within the UK. A seller based in Germany has sent me a message today threatening to report me to the 'Tax Authority'. I've no idea why, I do sell quite well but it's all stuff I've owned, it's not a business. Should I ignore the message or reply and conform that I am a private seller?

I would ignore it personally as it's ignorant crap, although I might report them to eBay.

You are doing what are entitled to do, so you have no worries as far as I can see.

Why would they care if they live in Germany?

Ignore OP they are either jealous of your good sales or out to scam you I some way.

I'm just wondering if they picked me out specifically or whether they have sent the same message to loads of people and are just waiting to see what responses they get. Maybe they are just bored Smile

I think you are right and I'll just ignore them.

Slightly off topic... I don't use eBay. Do you not gave to declare earnings from there at all? Or is it only if you are a shop, or buy things with the express intention of selling for profit?

make sure you add them to your blocked list

if you buy or make to sell you are a business and need to register as such with eBay and HMRC - if you sell on your own possessions you are not a business so no tax to pay and no need to register.

I've added them to my blocked list, first time I've put someone on there. Thanks for the advice Smile

I just ignore loon balls like this. EBay is full of them!

You only need to declare your finances to the HmRC if it is something you have specifically bought to resell. Not if you're just having a de clutter, for example
