Ok, in summary;

I buy a dvd on Buy It Now last night, with chaos here, so didn't check out the seller etc

go to pay, and it says contact the seller as the address is not registered with ebay

I do this, and for some reason it sounds a bit dodgy, not sure why.

i look at the feedback; he's only done 20 things, all dvds, all positive, but some say no box, one says its a different dvd but they didn't mind (??!!)

I email him back and ask him why, if he's obviously starting to list on a large scale, does he neither accept paypal nor have an address registered for the requested cheque payment. I also ask him if they are genuine dvds, and region 2.

I get 2 emails this morning. One repeats his postal address. The other says 'dont take this the wrong way but, to be nice, you should buy off some one else'.

So, why's he being nice? If he's dodgy to make money, that defeats the point. Or do you think someone else has access to his messages and sent that?
And there's nothing I can do, is there, until he files an unpaid dispute? I cant cancel the buy it now as a buyer.

I don't think there's any need to do anything. I would just walk away.
If he pursues you for the money then you can refer to the second e-mail.

mustrunmore · 06/11/2006 15:56

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. But I hate loose ends!
And its really bugging me that someone's on the scam, but willing to forewarn a potential victim!

Maybe he means to be nice as in
I could be really rude and tell you to eff off

Mum2FunkyDude · 06/11/2006 15:59

Is it a possible sting? Meaning a set up to trap illegal DVD trading? Then maybe you were checked out an deemed OK and then warned off? I love a conspiracy!

taylormama · 06/11/2006 16:16

oooh - avoid sellers like this. when me and DH started using Ebay about 4 years ago we were stung for about £80. Definitely forget about this seller.

mustrunmore · 06/11/2006 16:34

CD; did think of that.

Love the conspiracy theory!

Ok, so he's marked it as payment received now.

He's marked it as payment received so you will go away and not bother him. I'd just drop it, I think? Or you'll get bad feeback.

mustrunmore · 06/11/2006 20:13

Yeah, I know. I think part of it was also the suprise at the realisation that I had to make a cheque out to someone called Prince! (apologies to anyone with a dh or dh with this name).

the dont take this the wrong way means that he is selling fakes. Normally you can tell who is selling fakes as they are listed as region free or sold in sleeves rather than cases. Some people aren't bothered by it and so buy them anyway. so people liek him make a business out of it, but they don't usually intend to con people, so he is telling you not to buy so that when you get the fake you don't leave -ve or report him.

mustrunmore · 06/11/2006 20:32

There's a whole ebay underworld i dont know about i feel as out of depth and old as I do when people use text speak

Wouldn't care if it was a fake , except our player is so old it wont play copies

I think he is trying to build a profile - loads of scammers atm in time for xmas - i got stung for a non existent laptop in october. Just walk away. I would maybe inform ebay just to cover yourself. If this guy starts selling ipods and psp's and laptops in a couple of weeks don;t buy one!!!!

mustrunmore · 06/11/2006 21:11

I thought about that, but as i'm obviously not going to leave him any feedback, it isnt going to do him any more good than bumping up his number of transactions.

I saw last night that there was a story by watchdog about this...people that are marked as very good ebay sellers with loads of good feedback that is in fact selling fake goods. They did a whole story on this buying items etc. Sorry I missed it else I could've told you if my conspiracy was coming true
