What feedback do I leave for this transaction?

In short...

• bought a large item
• it was damaged in transit and returned to sender (ie I never received it)
• seller refused to accept I hadn't received it and refused to replace or refund
• I opened a case and the seller ha now initiated a refund

So what do I leave as feedback? A negative with some short description of lack of communication? Or is there a particular form of words that tips other buyers the wink?

nope - no particular words. Just neg and leave low stars - comment doesn't make much odds, as long as you don't mention paypal. I would def say unhelpful, untrustworthy seller in part of it.
