seller asking for contribution towards postage.

Won a auction for a sky box, seller charged us £5.99 for the postage. I thought it was a bit cheap. Last night I received a message from the seller asking for a contribution towards postage because it had cost £14.85 someone else posted it for her. I said to my husband that it was a bit cheeky but I will wait for the package to make sure its all working then send her another £4-£5. This morning the package arrived and the postage was paid with a franking machine. I am guessing someone used their work franking machine and I am not sure if I should send a snotty message or pay some more £ towards postage.

It's the buyers job to appropriately price up postage before listing. They have learnt a valuable lesson about assuming costs.

You entered a contract and agreed a price, you have fulfilled your agreement. I personally wouldn't agree, if they had asked before sending it maybe but, (If I'm reading it right) they sent it and informed you after the cost was more.

sellers problem, not yours (and I say this as a seller who's lost out on postage once as I didn't do my homework)

do not give any more cash (the other thing to bear in mind is that this could be a scam)

Just to make clear, won auction, paid, couple of days after received message asking for more £
Whatabaklava, how could this be a scam? I haven't checked if its working order yet. Will let dh do that when he gets home from work.

Seller should have checked before listing the item so her problem not yours,if you do have to return it for any reason I would use My hermes as their costs would be under £5 (not sure what it is) as the item would not be more than 2kg in weight it also includes the tracking,but hopefully all will be well with your purchase.It is against e-bay rules to request extra postage.

What a meant was it's just a way to get extra cash from you I.e. Seller always knew it was going to cost more, but advertising cheap postage, then "realised" it's going to visit more and tries to cash from buyer.

I think especially dodgy as postage paid with franking machine so no evidence of actual cost.

Don't pay any more!!

No - it is against the rules for the seller to ask the buyer for more postage after the auction end. So no - you don't need to send them any. And who on earth did they send it with to cost that much - is astronomical tbh.

Most sellers have taken a hit on postage they have underestimated - I know I have and you just have to suck it up and learn a lesson. Seller shouldn't ask you for more. They cannot give you neg fbas a buyer so there is no comeback to you.

Thanks whatabaklva, it makes sense. Dh asked me to send another £4 I said I would but I won't. So will just have to lie to him and will ignore her message. I said to dh they probably used their work franking machine so it wouldn't have cost them anything.

They sent it second class recorded with RM.
He is trying to put the sky box now but its not working so we don't know if its something to do with sky or the box.

I once won something on ebay that cost them more to send than I had paid in total for the postage and item so they lost money. I briefly felt bad for the seller but soon got over that! It's the sellers responsibility to price correctly. I always weigh anything I'm selling to ensure I've priced up the postage before listing.

Why do you need to lie to your OH?

It's pretty obvious that they priced it to sell and are trying to 'guilt' you into paying more.

Their loss if they messed up

Also, I don't use Ebay although I'm aware of it but do their fees get based on the item selling price rather than total price with postage?

You don't owe them anything but I like to be human about it. If you would have been happy to pay more postage then why not send something. If the combined price+postage was the max. you would have agreed to pay anyone then entirely their problem.

How incredibly heavy is a parcel that costs 15 to post 2nd class?!
