Seller won't accept Paypal

Found a business selling the oven we want on ebay but they won't accept Paypal.

They've got it as a payment option (because they have to!), but in the description it says that they won't accept it due to fees.

They'll only accept bank transfer or cash on collection. Can't do cash on collection (need to organise a courier anyway) and I'm not happy about a bank transfer as we won't be protected by PayPal/ebay guarantees.

Am I being overly cautious?!

Are you collecting the item yourself? If so then they are right not to accept paypal, but not due to feed, because it leaves them wide open to fraud. however they shouldn't have it listed on the listing as a payment method, prob an oversight.

I'd avoid I think. Too many ways for it to go wrong and it would be a lot of money to potentially lose if it did

The item is the other side of the country so we weren't going to do cash on collection. They are happy for us to arrange a courier though.

I checked on ebay, and all sellers have to offer Paypal so that's why it is an option - they've just added a caveat to say they won't accept it!

Just worried that it looks like we have no comeback through eBay if anything goes wrong if we pay via bank transfer.

Is it over £100 if so pay by credit card then you will be protected.

Sellers have to offer paypal as a payment option. However it is generally advised that for items that are collected in person or by a courier you should take cash on collection or bank transfer. The reason for this is that if the buyer claims the item was not received the seller has no proof of delivery ( eg a tracking no. via a postal service) so ebay will automatically side with the buyer. It doesn't sound dodgy to me, most collection items are the same.

I'd report them to Ebay. I certainly wouldn't pay up front. You will have no protection if the oven doesn't arrive.

He is selling the item much cheaper than anyone else so we offered to cover the paypal fees.

He has replied saying he 'can't' accept Paypal.

This may be a case of the offer is too good to be true Smile. Feedback is ok, but has only sold 50 items this year.

you would have no protection - but then nor would they if you arrange your own courier.

Find it from another seller and buy elsewhere is my advice. And report him for not accepting paypal too.
