I've left negative feedback but probably shouldn't have. Can I change it?

I left negative feedback for an item earlier today, and now I feel like I shouldn't have. It was partly because I received an absolutely rubbish item and partly because I'd been too busy with work before and took it out on the poor seller by not thinking before leaving feedback.

I ordered a wig (for a Halloween costume) from a business seller in China. I paid a bit more than the cheapest ones because I wanted something fairly decent (not real hair or anything amazing, just something that would look more or less like the picture).

The problem is, the wig pictured (description says item will be identical to photo) looks like real hair, is straight and is the dark brown. The wig I received is a garish light brown, looks like cheap plastic and is sticking out all over the place (no amount of brushing would make it sit straight).

I received it over 2 weeks ago, hadn't had much time for eBay and wanted to try to fix it before returning. Am I still covered if I want to return it? Or will the seller tell me where to go because I left negative feedback? It's the first time I've left neg feedback (although there have been plenty other times I should have) but I feel it was maybe a bit premature to do it, before messaging the seller.

yes you can open a case to return it - the seller cannot refuse a return. Open a case. Did you contact the seller before you negged? And if it is that rubbish surely they deserve a neg anyway?

Numanoid · 24/09/2014 19:07

I didn't contact them beforehand, which is why I feel bad. It wasn't hugely expensive and I wasn't expecting anything of a very high quality, but it was unbelievably bad.

I've opened a case asking to return it now, I was worried that they'd refuse if I'd already left feedback. To be honest at best I would have left neutral with the same comment (that it was a rubbish item) anyway.

they can't refuse a return - eBay will force them too if they are awkward.

Numanoid · 24/09/2014 19:49

Thanks, that's good to know. :) I'm happy to change the feedback if they appeal it, should have talked to them first. If they resolved it without drawing it out I'd give them neutral, no problem.

I think you can change feedback. You were a bit harsh to leave negative without making any effort to contact the seller first.

Branleuse · 25/09/2014 16:58

you received a shit item so gave a neg feedback. They deserved it. They shouldnt sell shit items.

nauticant · 25/09/2014 18:24

I'm with Branleuse. I wouldn't think twice about leaving negative feedback on an item with a misleading description.

PassTheCremeEggs · 25/09/2014 18:34

I don't agree that in this case you should have to contact the seller before leaving neg feedback. The item is rubbish, what can be say that will make it any less rubbish? You're warning other buyers that his items for sale might be bad quality. This is what eBay feedback is for.

If you leave neg feedback for an item that hasn't turned up for example, then it would be unreasonable to do it without contacting the seller, as it may not have been his or her fault. But low quality item - do it! He/she knows it's bad quality and should be called on it.

im a seller and it pees me off a bit when people leave negative feedback or open a case without contacting me, as if they have a genuine concern, I will usually refund them without asking them to return the item.

But then again I would never list a product with a misleading photo.

If I were you I would have contracted them and awaited their response before leaving negative feedback. If they had refunded quickly without requesting a return then I would have just left it.

This would be removed by ebay anyway, as it's against the feedback regulations.

I agree with Lottie - a quick message giving them chance to resolve is the fairest thing to do. Depending on their response would decide what feedback to leave.

Numanoid · 26/09/2014 15:39

I've been on eBay for a few years and have never left negative feedback before, there are a few times I definitely should have, but instead have either left neutral or none at all.

I probably should have contacted the seller first, but the item is beyond awful. They still haven't answered me, but I would happily change to neutral feedback if they could help. I'll try to do that if they do reply to me at some point.

I did notice, after checking recent negative feedback, that they had a lot of people complaining about the quality of the same and similar items.

If they haven't responded to your message then I wouldn't fret too much about leaving a neg.
