Would you give a refund if the postage worked out less than you though?

I sold a few items last week and I used the Royal Mail website to work out how much postage should be. However, when I posted the items it actually came out a bit cheaper.

Would you bother giving a refund? If so, what's the best way of doing it? It was only a couple of pounds, but I don't like feeling that I've ripped someone off.

Don't forget the cost of the packaging

I always overestimate if I'm not sure whether something is small enough to go as a small parcel then refund 1 or 2 pounds depending on if I've actually shelled out on packaging or just recycled stuff that I've had lying around (plus taking into account that lovely 10% that ebay now take from your postage costs). Buyers seem to really appreciate it especially as the price of the parcel is on the packages if you send by Royal Mail. It's easy to give refund through your PayPal account then just send the buyer a message explaining what you've done.

Ah yes, I always overlook that. However I did only use brown paper.

I've given refunds where difference has been £1 or more. Once got flamed on here when I said I wasn't going to give a refund of 50p which I felt was taking things a bit too far.

For items of clothing, I always charge £3 which is the £2.80 cost of a second class small parcel plus 20p packaging. Of course, eBay and PayPal have their cut from this as well so I actually make a loss on the postage charge.

Occasionally, things will go large letter which means I make a bit of profit. I don't refund as a matter of course although I would if someone complained.

Thanks. I've refunded the ones where there was a big difference. Ebaying is turning out to be much more time consuming than I thought!

yes i do it every time but not the full amount. I take about 20p for packaging. I don't want to get negs or bad stars

I find that refunding even the tiniest bit of overpaid postage gets me excellent, effusive feedback 99 times out of 100. I consider it an investment.
