Holy shit DP pressed button in sleep. Help!

According to eBay DP bought a car for £4000 last night. We haven't got £400 let alone £4000. I've contacted the seller, what do I do next? He's a complete prat, and worse, but there is no way we can do this

I only found out as I was checking a £4 order I'd made. It says awaiting payment. Is the shit going to hit the fan? I was very polite to seller. Tell me it will be okay.

It will be fine! You might get horrible feedback, but no one can make you pay that money.

Saying that, I've only done this myself once before. Bought a £500 handbag by accident when I had two tabs open.

I just didn't pay. Ignored it for as long as possible. The seller might have cancelled it, I'm not sure. But the 'items won' or 'recently purchased' thing went away eventually. Wasn't a problem for me.

I'm assuming the same happens for larger purchases too?

My DH often sits on the lounge falling asleep with his phone in his hand. As his hand twitches I see the screen of the phone flicking about & live in fear of him doing something similar. I don't do ebay so am not at all useful but hope it is easily fixable for you

just ask the seller to send a cancellation request - and they can't leave you horrible feedback so don't worry.

Ahhhh. Thanks for the hopeful replies. I've tried messaging the seller twice and ebay has sent a payment reminder . I hope I hear back soon, it's so worrying. I asked the seller for a cancellation so fingers crossed. Thanks again

well if the seller doesn't send a cancellation they will just file a non paying bidder dispute instead - which will close in 4 days and you will get a strike. Another strike in the next year can prevent you from bidding on many items so you need to tell your DP to use his own eBay account instead. But the seller cannot force you to pay the £4k so you can stop worrying about that.

Ahhhh. Thanks mindyour! He's not really got to grips with technology yet. At least we won't have to pay. Why would a seller not cancel though? Surely he would have to pay fees on the sale?

seller may not understand how ebay works and not realise they need to get their fees refunded.

No not yet. All that we have had is a message from eBay reminding us we haven't paid. The seller has had two messages from us requesting cancellation and that we never meant to buy the car, can't afford it, that it was a genuine mistake etc etc. I don't get it.

One unpaid item strike is no biggie at all. You have to screw up a lot worse than that to damage your Ebay buyer privileges.

You can retract a bid as long as you do it quickly. Might be too late now.

Yes it's in the bought list on my eBay. He must have pressed it. It was a buy it now price rather than a bid. I've been on eBay for 6 years and have never had a problem till dp started using it 7 months ago. It's still there awaiting payment

oh dear, well, worst that can happen is you get a non-payment strike. If you get 2 of those within a year then SOME sellers will ban you from bidding. After a year the strikes are forgiven. Also, even if a seller does ban bidding, you can message & ask them to change the settings for a specific auction. Some will accommodate.

Not being able to buy somethings on Ebay for just one year is no big deal at all.

It's in the seller's interests to send you a cancellation notice because they will get listing & Final value fees back. They are reasonably protected since you requested it. Then they can relist the items again immediately. Whereas if they file unpaid item dispute they'll have to wait longer to relist or get fees back.

Thanks lljkk. Can't see why the seller won't cancel if that's the case. His problem then. I've tried. I was very polite and he could prove to eBay that I requested it as it will be in his messages as proof. Unless he's on holiday?! Oh well. Seems it not as bad as I feared so just have to wait and see. Thanks again

The buyer can get cross and you may get a non payment strike but in the end no one will force you to physically hand 4 grand over. So don't worry.

I'm confused now. Still heard nothing. No messages to pay up and no cancellation. How long does it just sit there awaiting payment?? Surely the seller would have complained by now? If he had we would have heard wouldn't we? Aaarrrgghhh. I just want it gone. If left with nothing from the seller will it disappear or should we try to contact eBay about it. It's been early a month now

don't do anything - just delete it from your won items and forget about it.

They have 32 days to open a case - so not long now to wait hopefully?

Has the seller relisted and sold to someone else since? They probably don't realise they will have fees to pay so haven't cancelled the auction properly.
