Seller requested item back after refund

Bought some trousers back on 10 May and received them. I then opened a case as they had stains on them and got a note from ebay saying I was getting an echeque refund which came through eventually but never received any communication from seller so I binned the trousers.

I've now received a message from seller saying when are they getting trousers back?! I never got an address to return them to or any offer of paying postage just the refund so I assumed they didn't want them back. Is it likely that I am going to have to pay for these again?

I always thought that refunds were issued on receipt of returned items. Explain the situation to them. You may well have to pay again as there is no evidence of item returned. I expect someone more knowledgable than me will turn up soon to clarify.

I would have expected to have to return them too.

Viviennemary · 02/06/2014 12:37

You binned them. Shock. I think you should give back your refund.

Floggingmolly · 02/06/2014 12:40

Why did you imagine the trousers were yours to keep after you'd had your payment refunded?? The seller is perfectly entitled to request you reverse the refund.

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2014 12:40

You can't have a refund and keep the item. If you'd had a refund, they weren't yours to throw away.

Just spoken to ebay customer services who've advised that the seller should have requested them back before issuing a refund.

The seller didn't send me any messages though saying they wanted them back - if they had done of course I would have done so. As they hadn't said anything between issuing the refund and it clearing (& I didn't have their address) I just assumed they had written the item off.

I would have assumed the same thing. Had a similar situation, asked the seller if they wanted the item returned, they didn't bother replying and the refund came through so I waited a couple weeks and then chucked the item in the dress up box.

I've never had a refund on ebay before without having to return the item first and the seller's lack of communication did make me assume the item wasn't wanted just like you Coughle cheers for that.

ebay gave you a no fault refund so the seller hasn't refunded you at all - it is them. You don't have to repay or return them in those circumstances.

SistersOfPercy · 02/06/2014 14:07

butterfly is correct, sounds like eBay credited you with a 'no fault' refund which means the seller kept all the money from the sale. In these circumstances eBay usually advise you destroy or donate the item, either way the original seller has no claim to them.

If you had sent them back seller would have been able to sell them twice. Ignore seller. They are trying it on.

I wouldn't worry about this. You did nothing wrong. Tell them you binned them then block them.
