Collection only and Paypal

I have noticed a few references on here to not accepting Paypal for collection only items. Could someone please explain to me what the scam is with this?

My DH is selling some large items that can only be collected and don't want him to get scammed.

You have to have electronic trackable proof of delivery ie courier or Royal Mail for paypal.
What the scammers do is pay by paypal, collect the item and then put in a claim for non delivery or stolen card etc.
PayPal ask you for proof of delivery - you don't have it because they collected it and paypal refund them. It doesn't matter if you empty the account as they will still reverse it and chase you for the debt.

Hey presto they have your item and the money.

I think some people do allow PayPal & collect but insist buyer signs a receipt, or videos the collection or similar.

PedantMarina I understand that charge backs have still been successful and such " evidence" has been challenged .

If it's an amount you could afford to loose then paypal is fine. For me up to say £20- I can't think scamming is worth it for small amounts, and whilst my pride would be hit to be proved wrong, my pocket can stand it.

Otherwise cash on collection only,.

signing a receipt or videoing the collection is no protection at all

cash or bank transfer is the only way for a buyer to pay if they are collecting - no exceptions whatsoever. I have never heard of ebay considering video evidence or a signed receipt proof of collection. After all the video could be anyone, and the receipt could be made up after the event.

Thank you for the advice. Can he change the payment method once it is listed? I have had a look under revise and can't see how to do it.

I've noted,at the bottom of the listing page,that cash on collection is the method of payment required.

I have had another look and see that you have to offer Paypal but how do you get cash only?

Ebay help is really useless. Can't find the answer to any of my queries there!

I am really nervous about this as we are amateurs just selling some unwanted fairly high value stuff and don't want to be the victims of scammers.

you cannot remove the paypal option from the listing because ebay don't allow it - they own paypal and want the fees. Ebay help will not advise you on this - huge loophole which they refuse to address. If you are unsure ask on the ebay community boards - but they will tell you exactly the same as I am telling you now.

but you write on your listing in very big letters - cash on collection only - any paypal will be refunded. Even if the buyer arranges their own courier you still don't take paypal then either as you have no tracking and no redress with the courier if the item is damaged in transit.

and if they do pay by paypal then you do refund straight away and ask for cash.

Then you can't be scammed.

I meant to say that if you 'revise' your listing,just add that you will only accept a cash payment,in the section for item details,at the bottom of the page. This is what I have done,and I simply won't accept Paypal.

We thought it would be simple to sell the items but it is a minefield!

oh, hadn't realised. never done it myself, but heard others suggesting the receipt idea. perhaps they saw it as a deterrant?
