Help item not collected by seller so sent back to me?

I won a jacket which was described as new without tags. When it arrived it was not as described, it had a child's name written on it in laundry marker and smelled very obviously of washing powder.
This is the first time over ever had problems with anything from eBay. I took it up with the seller and she aggreed to refund me. All fine.
I posted the jacket back (paying for postage) on the 15th of December. I received a refund from the seller. All was well.
Until today, the jacket has arrived back here with a Royal Mail ticket saying "not called for".
What does this mean?
Should I contact the seller?

Contact her via eBay and tell her what has happened. And if she still wants the item returned, I would insist on her paying the postage up front, as there is no way you should have to pay the postage a second time, when it is not your fault it didn't reach its destination.

I assume she was out when the postman tried to deliver it, and then it waited at the local sorting office for a period of time, and was returned to you when she failed to go and collect it - none of which is your fault, so there is no way you should have to pay postage a second time.

I agree with SDTG and I would also contact ebay customer services - just see what advice they can offer. it is then on their records.

ebay won't do anything so it is up to you. If seller does want it sending back they need to pay you the postage first.

They obviously weren't in when RM tried to deliver and didn't bother collecting it from the sorting office so it has been returned to you.

Ok thanks. If I send her an email will it be logged with eBay or do I need to email eBay separately?
Thanks for the advice.

As long as you contact the seller through the 'contact seller' option on ebay rather than using her actual email address it will be logged and then there's no need to contact ebay unless you want to. If you tick the little box at the bottom of the message before you click send you'll get a copy of the email but it will be on your ebay messages under 'sent' anyway.

It's not really an issue ebay would get involved in now as you sent the item back. It's not your fault they didn't collect it.

Just contact the seller once through the ebay messaging system explaining that you've received the item back from Royal Mail and could they let you know if they want it sent again (you could even specify a date for them to reply by so you don't have to keep the item for ages).

Definitely don't send back until they've replied and paid for the return postage.

Ok thanks very much. That's what I'll do.

did they refund the paypal correctly? - as in refunded the payment rather than sending you money as a payment. As long as they did that the refund cannot be recalled and you have nothing to worry about.

ophiotaurus · 20/01/2014 13:39

It was sent as a refund.

I emailed her on the 4th of Jan and have still had no reply.
What should I do?
Should I try emailing her again? The parcel is annoying me sitting in the hall!

I would give it to charity tbh - seller doesn't want it back I guess.
