I will cut a long story short but I brought a wedding dress cheap off of eBay but the seller has sent a totally different dress, to return it is going to cost 3/4 of what I paid for it and the seller has said they will send a courier to collect it.

Am I covered if it goes missing/ gets damaged if I proceeded that way they re planning to use Hermes and the package arrived ripped open as
it is.

I am guessing I am not covered as a buyer because I wouldn't have proof of return etc.

you are only covered if you get the tracking number from the courier. Why can't they paypal you the money and you courier it yourself?

She says her husband works for hermes and that they will cover me if it goes missing etc as its recorded but my understanding of Hermes is that they only deal with the contractor and would only refund her.

if you open a case ebay ask you to return tracked, so you need that tracking number to prove return. If it gets lost then yep you lose your item and won't get a refund. How much was it?

Check their feedback. If it seems ok then I would go with it. Are they sending you the dress you actually wanted as an exchange?
