WWYD - ask for partial refund?

I've bought loads on ebay and rarely had a problem so I'm not sure what to do.

I bought a second hand dance dress for DD - best part of £100, but it is stained, fake tan marks (on white), dirty at the bottom from presumably being on the floor and there several pulls and frays and bits of trimming missing. None of this was mentioned in the listing, it was listed as in good condition.

It was bought for a competition next weekend, so I haven't the time to return it, get a refund (assuming seller will refund) and buy a new one - can't afford to buy a new one til get money back.

However I could get it dry cleaned in that time - it would need specialist cleaning (£35) - do you think it is reasonable to ask for a partial refund? I know sellers are wary of partial refunds as they think people are trying it on.

I would message the seller ASAP and point out the issues. You could suggest her reimbursing for an attempt at cleaning or refund of full amount upon return, as well as return postage ( though as per eBay policy, they don't have to refund return post). PayPal have an option for only actually paying 14 days after the item ships. I've never used it but might be worth looking into if you need to buy another.

Actually, reading your post again I'd be doing my best to locate an alternative and demand a return for refund. Take photos of damage and take it up with eBay too.

Thanks bluecarrot, I've taken pics of all the frays / marks etc. I do like the dress, but I'm annoyed they didn't list the faults or I wouldn't have bought it.

ebay won't enforce a partial refund - I would open a case and return with proof, not recorded as that won't be sufficient, and shop elsewhere.

Have you contacted the seller?

If you get it dry-cleaned you are deemed to have found its condition acceptable. Think carefully about what is least hassle for you.
