Collection item with cash on pick up - paying by paypal & wanting to arrange a courier!!!!!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

My item description clearly says pick up only with cash on the day but the buyer has paid by paypal and is asking to have a courier pick up the item.

I have re-iterated that the description clearly says pick up only with cash on the day & have offered to refund the paypal & requested that they let me know when they want to pick up.

Am I being fair? If the buyer continues to insist on a courier, can I refund the paypal & cancel the transaction?

[Sigh]

Yes you are being sensible & fair!

Don't back down.

SavoyCabbage · 09/10/2013 12:45

I would reverse the paypal,payment.

PostBellumBugsy · 09/10/2013 12:50

Thank you both.

I've refunded the paypal payment, with a very polite explanation of why. The buyer is still requesting postcode so she can arrange a courier! Think that this is going to be slow & painful.

i can understand the buyers point of view. They might not be able to collect the item themselves so they are sending someone else to collect it on their behalf. You tell them when a courier can come to collect and they are more likely to be on time too. This part is no different from arranging to collect in person.

If your bank account is connected to your paypay ( i think it has to be now) there is no fee in obtaining the money.

Stick to your guns. Ask them if the courier is going to pack the item too and come after tea on Friday when you,ll be in!

We had this with some bar stools once. It was bloody annoying. Wanted me to wrap the items for the courier to collect. I declined and said I would refund their money. In the end they posted me some flattened boxes that they had got from a local furniture shop so I packed the stools and the courier collected.

Can you ask them to post packing materials out to you and guarantee a time slot? If they won't then I think you are right to cancel the transaction.

I had this with our buggy.

Pickup in person ONLY and cash on collection literally festooned all over my item listing. I had heard about too many people getting scammed over couriered buggies, from mumsnet threads.

I returned the paypal and said local pick up only, cash on collection. She offered to send the cash by courier. Told me 'all' I had to do was put the thing in a bin bag and wait in for a courier! I work!

She threatened me with bad feedback and I said go right ahead, I will respond that the item was local pickup only and you are 200 miles away demanding a courier.

Ebay were brilliant, I put a dispute in, they could see my original listing, and I got the transaction cancelled no probs. Some people bid on local pickup only things if they are cheap - local pickup stuff often goes cheaper depending on your area.

Sod waiting in for couriers or packing up stuff when you asked for local pickup. Stick to your guns, refund the money and put in a request for the item to be cancelled.

12thmonkey, sending a courier is very different from arranging collection in person. I wanted the buyer to SEE the item and agree that it was what they wanted and in the condition they expected, before removing it. You can't do that with a courier and then you might end up with all the faff of a buyer saying 'item not as described' etc.

In the end my buggy went free to someone I heard about having an unexpected 4th child after a long age gap. She was very grateful!

The reason I put collection in person with cash on the day is so that I am not worrying what time a courier may or may not come, whether or not the courier will pack the item, whether or not the courier will damage the item and all of that.

That is why it says pick up only with cash on the day in really big letters on the description of the item, as well as in the ebay descriptive bit too.

I'm not at home during the day. I suppose if they can get a courier to guarantee they will collect between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, then that might be possible but if that was what they wanted & the item clearly says collection in person with cash on the day - then they should have requested that before buying!!!!!

How did you get on OP? Did you put in a request to get the transaction cancelled? Is there another bidder that you can offer 2nd chance to?

PostBellumBugsy · 11/10/2013 09:36

Established that the successful bidder would not be prepared to collect in person & pay cash on the day. Have now put in a request to ebay to cancel the transaction.

I'm not sure how 2nd chance offer works - do I have to wait until after the transaction has been cancelled to do that?

I think it's in the drop down menu where you choose to mark item despatched, view order details etc in 'my eBay' 'sold items'.

Click 2nd chance offer and it will bring up a list of all the bidders and how much they bid. Choose one and they then get 48 hours or so to reply. Be aware though that not everyone will reply. Some sellers get a friend to push the bidding up and the offer 2nd chance so some buyers are a bit suspicious. You may need to resist the item.
