Question about bidding

So you click place bid and it says place your maximum bid, and you confirm and it has entered an amount more than is currently bid but not to the value of your maximum bid.

So in the last throes of bidding do you lose out if someone else's maximum bid was higher than yours? Does that make sense??

Yes.

I placed bid for an item the other night and got it because my maximum bid was higher than theirs.

Exactly. But if your max bid is a lot higher than the next high bid you only pay the amount shown (£1 higher than next bid I think)

Yes, that's how it works. Say the item is currently at £3.20. The current high bidder may have bid significantly higher than that say £5.00. Then if you come along and bid your maximum say £8.00 -- then it will look at the previous bidder's maximum and you'd end up the high bidder at £5.50. But eBay still knows your actual maximum. If anyone else bids at less than £8.00 before the close of bidding then your bid will be automatically increased up to your maximum, but if someone bids more than £8.00 then they would be the new high bidder.

Absolutely!
My maximum bid was £25.50 - because I really, really wanted the item, and it turned out that their max' bid must have been £13.20, because I got the item for £13.80.....so bids were increasing at 50 p each.
