I've sold two cars on ebay, no problems with either transaction.

One had been sat on our drive for over a year as the head gasket had gone, explained all this more than once on the listing, it was bought by a mechanic who was going to strip it and rebuild it.

The other was our old and reliable Ford Focus estate car, ended up in a bit of a bidding frenzy and went for twice what we expected.

Beware of dealers asking you for a knock down buy it now price, only take cash on collection, don't give them the keys to test drive it on their own and make sure someone else is at home with you when they come to collect.

no paypal is never safe for collected items nor is it recommended for cars. Take the cash to your bank to check before you let them take the car, or ask for bankers draft and ensure it is cleared first.

My first every ebay sale was a car - I listed it for £80 as that's what it would have got at the scrapyard, and it went for nearly £300! So I'd definitely recommend it.

Sorry to hiijack - but I'm looking at buying a car on ebay at the moment. Will I be protected if I pay by cash on delivery? Or cheque actually?

Thanks.

with a private sale no, not protected at all. Buy from a trader and you have more rights. If it all goes wrong small claims court is often your only recourse. A seller won't take paypal for a car and it offers no protection anyway.

I've shown interest in a car and asked the seller for the VIN and serial number on the paperwork. I've taken advice from a company that runs car checks but the seller is unwilling to disclose these details.

Should I be worried?

I would think so - why don't you go and post on the ebay community motors board for advice?
