Private bidders

I've been seeing this more often on eBay, competing with a private bidder.
As far as I can see on auctions, you can't establish who you are bidding against anyway so who the need to be a private bidder?
Anyone else come across this?

no one can read your feedback but keeping feedback private means not allowed to sell it is mostly people who do not want sellers to know what else they are buying, they may be buying up lots of cheap stuff for resale under a different seller name or buying something they wish to keep secret like used shoes or ladies clothes when they are male etc
