How much profit on postage!

So I bought a bundle dresses for my DD and postage was £5 recorded. She/he say they post out within a day of payment they sent out after 5 working day's. So they arrived today 2nd class standard and only cost £2.20! So she/he made £2.80 profit and she/he also used a used mail bag to send out so no cost for that either.

So can anyone help me write a message asking for some of that 'profit' back, I'm so angry I've been on eBay for years and never seen such a profit on postage! I always refund the extra if I make more then 20p to pay for the postage bags and tape.

Hope this makes sense I've only had 3 hours sleep so a little out of it today.

I should also add I'm not bothered that it took 5 says to post out just that I paid for recorded and £2.80 could pay for postage for something else.

TBH that sounds reasonable to me, I think the fact that you're "so angry" must have more to do with your lack of sleep than £2.80.

As you're an Ebay veteran, presumably you have a decent idea of what postage should cost and you bid on this item, so you must have decided that it was reasonable and that the total cost of the items made it a good buy for you, so what's changed?

Send the seller a message saying politely that you paid for recorded, they sent standard, please can they refund the difference. (You can check what that is - may not be the full £2.80.) If they don't respond/respond negatively you can raise it through ebay/paypal as a dispute and they'll be made to refund it I think.

sadly they cannot be made to refund, but you can leave appropriate feedback and low stars. Extortionate postage is fee avoidance and not permitted on ebay. Sellers only pay fees on the item price, not the postage amount, so if they sell an item cheap with massive postage costs their fees to ebay are greatly reduced.

Of course you are right to be angry and I think Battlefront has missed the point a bit. It wasn't that fosterdream objected to paying £5 for postage as she thought the packet would be sent recorded delivery. So she was in effect paying for the security of recorded delivery. Which she did not get. So she paid for something and did not get it. If I were you, fosterdream, I would contact the seller, point out that you paid £5 for recorded delivery but that the packet was only sent second class and only cost £2.20 and ask if the seller would do the decent thing and refund you some of the cost. I would ask for £2.30 myself, since, as a seller, I usually add 50p to the postage costs to cover packaging (even if they reused a bag this time) and the time spent packaging and going to the PO. If they don't respond, I am not sure there is much else you can do, but someone else might know better than me.

I think if they said thy would send recorded within a day and then sent it five days later by second class post then you have a right to be annoyed.

I have to admit that sometimes I have calculated postage wrong, I managed to over charge someone ten pounds once! But I did email them straight away and sent them the ten pounds back.

Well it was a bundle so sadly had no idea of the weight and they have 5 stars so thought they didn't over charge. Not that I think it should matter but I paid the going rate for the dresses so it wasn't even a bargain price.

I've been on eBay for over 8 years and only ever had this issue once before. I've sent a polite message saying it was recorded postage and how it was send 2nd class standard for £2.20 and hoping we could resolve this.

Hopefully we can sort it as I don't like leaving bad feedback unless nothing can be sorted.

ebay operates on trust doesn't it - like you say you don't know the weight of a package - like Catsdontcare said - a decent seller will refund excess postage. A rubbish one will argue 'you knew the price when you bid'. I hope your seller turns out to be the former :)

I complained to a seller about something similar last year - I paid £4.50 for postage and when item came it had cost £2.20 and was wrapped in an old carrier bag! I got an apology and the excess refunded.

I agree that you don't always know the weight. If the seller uses a box to post, it will be heavier than you expect.

Hopefully, if enough buyers complain, sellers will think twice about gross overcharging for postage in future.

I just think its so ridiculous to make a nearly a 60% profit on postage. No message to say it was posted out late, I was beginning to think my post was getting lost or very late as I'm still waiting for a parcel my mum has sent (from France) for DD's 2 weeks ago!

If you paid for recorded, then the parcel should have been sent recorded - because that was the agreement between you and the seller when you paid for the item. Hopefully, she just forgot that it should have gone recorded and will refund you the difference.

And there I was thinking that charging an extra 40-50p might seem excessive for brand new packaging and sending out asap and recorded (of which as I used paypal I end up being charged a fee on for the postage cost too but I always wonder if that is excessive - obviously not)

Quick update got a full refund on the excess postage (smile) so I shall leave positive feedback and leave 4 stars on relevant star feedback.

So glad this is sorted out. Think I'll buy myself a extra large chocolate bar because well I don't need a reason (wink)
