Everybody wants to BIN!

I listed 6 items on Saturday - I posted a thread earlier in the week debating whether to accept a BIN price on one of the items (and decided not to, as somebody else had already started to bid). Since then i have received 4 messages asking for BIN prices for the other items! I have stuck to my policy of refusing if somebody has already bid, but is this just normal practice now? I would wonder if it was people wanting the items in a hurry before Christmas but given that it is things like taps I don't think it can be that. Has anybody got any insight to offer?

I would think it is likely to be people who want stuff in time for Christmas. Post seems to be slowing down already and last post dates are looming. Not all buyers after a BIN are setting out to rip you off.

I can understand that, though I fail to see why you would need a set of taps for Christmas, and one of the items is collection only so no worries wrt post. I was just a bit taken aback, had never thought to do that! To be honest, if the price they agree is reasonable I don't mind doing it.

I often ask for a buy it now if I don't want to wait and bid for something - does that make me cheeky? Lots of people don't get the chance to bid at the last minute and just want to get the sale done and dusted. Doesn't make them suspicious.

well if they bid and win they can get your phone number easily. Just make sure you don't take paypal for a collected item, only cash.

We had that a few weeks ago. Some cheeky mare wanted a buy it now of £2.50 including delivery for an old but popular game boy game. I declined as I knew it would go for more than that on bidding and it did, nearly £10 with postage on top!

Some people just try their luck I think. I got a sob story from her, then a link to a finished listing saying she tried to buy that one at the price she was offering me but the seller was on holiday and couldn't post in time. I checked the link, the seller had ended the bidding early and her story was not true!

The one who wants to come now has just messaged and said it is ok he's got one. Guess he was desperate!
fergoose as long as you know what your top price is you can bid at any time, no need to wait until the end.

well no sensible buyer will bid until the closing seconds will they.

VBut as long as your highest bid is higher than the people bidding at the last moment you will still get the item.

(it doesn't bid your maximum immediately, only if somebody else pushes your bid up)

Fergoose why not accept PayPal fir collection items? I always ask them to be paid by PayPal despite the fees whether it's collection or not.
Is that a bad idea?

Re Buy It Now. I usually don't add a BIN option even when there're no bids yet because more often than not the buyer will then NOT do BIN (even if we've agreed a price beforehand) and so I'm left to pay the eBay fee for adding the BIN option

bigbadbarry - you should never bid until the end. bid once, bid as late as possible and bid your highest. Bidding early just shows your hand early and makes the item look more desirable. And gives others the potential to bid you up or shill bid you

Guendaline - you will have no proof of delivery so buyer can pay by paypal collect then do a chargeback so never, ever take paypal for a collected item. Cash only or no item, no exceptions.

PayPal for collection is a bad idea because they could say they didn't receive it and then PayPal take the money back out of your account.

I'd generally agree. Unless I was unable to be online when the auction ends, which is what you were talking about, in which case it is worth a shot of an early bid, surely?!
Even radio 4 has been on about people collecting then reversing a PayPal payment so it must be fairly common?

I has some one ask if they could collect and I said yes, they then messages to ask what time I leave for work, I replied with 8.30 and heard nothing until they knocked on my door at 7.30 am asking for their item Shock yawn.

I heard of reverse payments but don't really understand how they work. Thing is, you can't only accept cash, right? I thought sellers wereforced to accept PayPal?
I must have been very lucky then. Never had a problem and have been selling since 2004 (not a business though).

ebay want you to accept paypal as they own the company and they want the fees - but they are negligent to tell you to accept paypal for a collection only item. You are quite right to refuse paypal and insist on cash for a collected item.

every large item i have listed i have been asked for a bin even if i put in the description that I will not do bin,

i dont even respond to them now!

if you can not bid last minute use a sniper like goofbid ( used to be goodfbay)

it is silly to bid early though sometimes bidding 99p only and bidding more at last minute stops someone adding BIN, though of course they could still cancel all bids etrc

NEVER EVER Paypal for collection only

bidbadbarry is you bid early I can work out your max bid by slowly bidding you up, then cancelling bids and still then bid just over your max late, it would enable me to work out what high bid i needed and of course if I outbid you with 3 hours to go you could put in another bid, but if I wait until last5 seconds you have no chance
