Ebay seller postage increase

I bought a toy on ebay at the weekend for just over £16 and it was listed with £3.50 p and p. After a delay the seller has now contacted me to say the the postage will actually cost a further £1.80 and has requested further payment.

I feel a bit torn - should I pay the top up or expect the seller to absorb the cost? Do Ebay have rules about these types of requests?

I don't know if there are any rules on this but I believe the seller should suck it up.

I'm predominantly a seller, if I charge too much I refund, if I charge too little I slap myself and learn for next time.

It would depend on how much you want this item though and how good a price you paid. Seller could cancel the transaction and refuse to sell it to you, but then she risks a slap from Ebay.

My understanding is that they can't change the postage charge after the auction has ended - it's their tough luck for not weighing the item properly before quoting postage.

Reply saying that the price they can charge for the item is the price quoted in the auction so you have paid that and now expect to receive your item but will not be paying any further costs.

As a frequent seller who has undervalued post I have paid extra post when asked although I don't normally ask myself. I did however have to ask for more post on an item last week as the multiple purchase discount went through as free p&p for some reason removing postage from the final invoice I sent. Had it been a £2.20 package I wouldnt have bothered but at over £5 I couldn't suck it up. So if they have good feedback and the item is heavy I would pay it.

no they cannot ask you for extra money - it is not allowed. Their error, they have to pay for it. It is shifting the goal posts after you won the auction at certain terms - so not permitted and you should not pay them a penny more.

I've also just realised that my maximum bid was only £0.95 more than I paid for the item, so it seems even more cheeky to be asking me for an additional £1.80. If the bidding had gone higher than my max I would have dropped out of the race.

Think I'm going to decline further payment and wait for the response.
