Do I have to pay 12p per photo (first one free)?

I'm sure you used to get more free than that

It depends on the category you are listing in. In some, all 12 photos are free!

and if you host in photobucket you can add them to your listing in the body of the text, and then you won't get charged for extras

Ahhh...yes, that's the problem, didn't realise about the category thing, have managed to tweak and get for free.

It's actually really easy to use photobucket to host photos. I tried it for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised.
