Quick query about combining postage costs

I bought 2 items (paperback books, not massive ones, around 300pages each) from the same seller and was charged £1.96 P and P for each one. The items pages state that they do not offer combined postage charges, so I didn't ask them to combine the costs.

But they have just arrived in the same envelope.

I feel a bit peeved - am I just being tight or are they being naughty?

How much did they actually cost to post?

I don't know, the sticker says citipost tracked. I paid for Royal Mail second class post and bought them together.

It's a proper ebay bookseller rather than an individual.

Books used to be one of the categories that limited you on how much you could charge for P&P didn't it? if this is still the are, it may be that they cost more than £1.96 to post (a disposable camera cost me £2.70 recently)
