I was the highest bidder for something for my daughter. It was something big that would need collecting. Was just attempting to check the seller's address (thought she would give me the specific address but she just repeated town & county) and have realised I have got the location wrong and it is somewhere in England, not Scotland (where I live!!).
I hadn't paid yet-can I get out of the purchase? Is it up to her? What do I do now? (Have emailed her telling her of mistake but am panicking!!)

I think it is up to her and if she's a bit unreasonable she may open a case against you - I say unreasonable as you've obviously made a genuine mistake Sad

How big/ how expensive is the item?

Any mumsnetters near to location who could collect for you and sort something out??

I did this once with a huge laser printer - didn't realise it was collection only - seller was happy to offer it to next highest bidder and it was sorted that way!!! Phew!!

fergoose · 13/06/2012 21:39

you can ask the seller to cancel the transaction to get their fees back - they can send you a request

then they can do a second chance offer or relist the item

bananasarebeautiful · 13/06/2012 21:40

It cost £80 and is a playmobil school. If the seller can offer it to someone else do I need to do anything now? I guess I need to wait for her response first anyhow. It is in the lake district and what would have been a half hour drive would now be a three hour drive (six round trip-my husband will kill me)!!
What does a case against me mean?

Oh, thanks fergoose. So she would need to initiate something?

bananasarebeautiful · 13/06/2012 21:43

She is offering to post for £12. Wish I hadn't bothered with this!

Does a case against me mean that I would be forced to pay? Or just blacklisted? Not sure how this all works.

Look up on Royal Mail website and Parcel2go.com to see how much postage would really cost, and if £12 isn't a fair amount you could always offer to arrange a courier yourself?

A case against you isn't serious, especially as a buyer, she'd just be getting ebay to chase you for payment.

sc2987 · 13/06/2012 22:07

£12 isn't that much considering the price of the item. How much would it have been in petrol if she'd lived where you thought?

I'd take her up on it gratefully

bananasarebeautiful · 13/06/2012 22:10

How would they chase me?!

I think it's a bit bulky so wouldn't be surprised at £12-but it makes it more expensive than I would have wanted to pay.

I guess it is easy to ignore petrol cost-whereas if I'm paying £92 I might as well have bought it from a shop. My husband is REALLY going to kill me!

if she does a non paying bidder dispute rather than a cancellation then you will just get a strike on your account. Just 1 of these makes no difference, repeated strikes can make you lose your ebay account - but just one is nothing to worry about.

FannyFifer · 13/06/2012 23:11

Did u get Lancashire and Lanarkshire confused by any chance? Done that myself! Grin

lisaro · 13/06/2012 23:19

Aw I feel for you. Someone recently bought something from me and didn't realise we were so far from his friends he would be visiting in the same (large) county. You could say he could have checked but to be fair West Yorks is a massive county which he didn't realise. Fair enough, bit of a kerfuffle but not the end of the world. We agreed to cancel, I offered second chance and bless him he still offered to pay the difference. I said no but if if really bothers him bung it in a charity box. Happy people all round and absolutely no hard feelings. hope you can sort it OP.

bananasarebeautiful · 14/06/2012 09:40

Fanny-that was exactly it! And the names of the towns/villages were uncannily similar too unfortunately. (At least I will remember where Lanarkshire and Lancashire are now!)

Thanks Lisaro, haven't heard back yet but am hoping that this will happen for me.
