Bidding Programs?

So, I've tried to buy something on eBay.

I bid above the current bid - and nanoseconds later, I've been beaten. I assume therefore there is a bidding program in place.

I really need this item (lost something from a set of DS's toys and he's devastated).

Can I therefore use a program (as I have to work) and if so - what do you recommend?

Search for sniping programmes (think that's what it's called). Dh at work but know he used one.

There are a few on apple store- last minute bid seems popular but not sure if actually any good . Can check reviews
