I'm selling a cap on Ebay, and it's generated more interest than I expected. A few days ago a bidder contacted me to say could I put a BIN on and he'd buy and collect in person straight away.

I said I couldn't revise the listing now as lots had already bid, wished him luck, and told him if he won he'd be welcome to pick it up today when listing ends.

So I just got a message saying 'Hello am I still ok to pick up the hat today? What's your address, I'll be there within the hour if that's ok.'

There are still 20 minutes left. What is he playing at, or is he just thick?

Sounds like he's being a tit. Just message him back to say that IF he wins the auction of course he's more than welcome to collect it today. Cash only of course Smile

Why not PayPal? I thought that was the safest way. Do you mean because he wants to collect in person?

If someone collects cash only other wise they can claim they didn't receive it...

Yes, he could claim you hadn't posted it to him if paid by Paypal.

You need cash on collection.

I only learnt about this scam this week, so I've got the last of my buyers to sign their PayPal receipt to say they've collected it.

I'm not sure it would stand up in court, but I only found out thanks to this thread this week!

signed paypal receipt to prove collection? The only safe way is cash for collection, a signed receipt means nothing and with a paypal chargeback the buyer would get their money refunded if you have no online proof of delivery.

I'm not planning on doing it again - it was the last 2 things I had received paypal for before realising this scam existed.

Sounds like you need to take a photo of the person collecting it and with the money or signing the receipt...

He did win in the end, paid cash on collection (£6 more than when he emailed me!). But when I went to leave feedback his account was deactivated already, and it was honestly only about 20 minutes after he was here! Weird, huh?

He will have known the area, as you have to put some indication of where you are if you are offering an item for local pick-up.

He did say in his first email about the BIN that he was in the next town up, only about 15-20 minute drive away, and he picked up from my home address, but I didn't get the door. DH said he was a young lad.

It was a baseball cap from an american football team. My dad sent two over, and only DH wears them. Had no idea anyone would pay £23 for it!
