Child's toy reeks of cigarettes - what to do?

I'm new to EbayShock.......

Have been hunting for a specific toy/pillow for Xmas and found it on Ebay.
It arrived yesterday reeking of cigarettes and obviously I don't think it's suitable now.
Am I going to be out of pocket by returning it?

What do I do, please any old hands willing to spare the time to educate me??

can you not wash it then?

fergoose · 18/11/2011 10:26

email the seller and tell them it is not as described and you wish to return it. A good seller will give you your return postage costs as well as your original payment back.

if you wash it then you are accepting it

If you return it to the seller make sure you send recorded delivery, ie with a signature to prove they have received it back.

Did it come in a plastic bag? Some black bin liners - or even some mailing bags - can give their contents a "smokey" smell

moragbellingham · 18/11/2011 19:06

I'm an ex-smoker and so am familiar with the smell, and really can't stand it - we are always the worst.

It's a big item and not for washing so am not going to attempt it. I don't see why I should have to as the item is new with tags, and so will email the seller as suggested.

Thanks for the replies, fingers crossed.

unfortunately some brand new mailing bags seem to smell of smoke I normally buy blue ones but as they did not have the size i wanted bought grey ones they definitely smell bad though brand new, so now I only use them for non clothing items like books etc which is a nuisance as have had to buy more bags

if you return the seller (unless business seller and even then they don't so long as specified in terms)) does not have to pay return postage and if they do they will only refund what it cost them to send out so if they sent second class they are not going to fund first class recorded back
