Item on back order, 2nd Best Offer

I put in a Best Offer but that was declined so I upped my offer and put in a 2nd Offer, which they havent yet accepted or declined. However, an hour or so after I put in my 2nd offer I get the email through from ebay to say my offer was declined and seller added a note to say that the item is now on back order.
I've contacted the seller to ask if my 2nd offer will also be declined as I'd rather they did that so I could get the item elsewhere but I've not heard back from them.
Are they able to put me on a back order waiting list as I've made a 2nd offer, had I known it was not available I wouldn't have put in another offer!

you can cancel a best offer here

offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?RetractBestOfferShow&&guest=1&guest=1

I thought sellers could only sell items they had in their possession, not those which are on order?

Thats what I thought too, I didn't think you could sell an item you didn't have!

Luckily they came back to me with a counter offer, which I declined and I've now bought it from someone who actually has it!

Cancelling a best offer goes on your account as a bid retraction.
