New to ebay: someone tried to scam me but I spotted it. Just tell me this....

I recently listed something and someone clicked BIN. The transaction was clearly fraudulent (nothing showed up in my PayPal account, the shipping address was Nigeria even though I'd said ship to mainland UK, and the email from the buyer that was meant to be from PayPal did not link back to the PayPal website, etc).

Anyway, obviously I am not shipping the item!

I just wanted some confirmation that I am not expected to ship until the payment actually appears in my PayPal account.

No you must never send an item without payment first

you will need to change your buyer requirements - don't allow bidders from abroad etc

Have you reported the transaction to get your fees back?

thanks, I had reported the transaction already and changed my buyer requirements, though I had made it clear in the listing that I only ship to mainland UK.

making it clear in listing is not enough, when listing always used advanced selling and then tick buyer requirements you can exclude countries, people with no payment strikes etc

you can then save it as a template for future selling so you don't have to keep typing same stuff in each time

thanks sarah. I spent some time sorting out my settings etc last night. I had another fraudulent email from the scammer too. I did the live chat with someone from ebay who got that buyer removed and confirmed (though I already knew it) that the emails were fakes. They were not that sophisticated (looked good on the surface but spelling errors and outlandish statements), had they been more so they might have got me.

Live chat man said you cannot get your fees back, but going to check as it sounds like I should be able to. I'd done it as a free listing over the weekend, so it's just 38p or whatever for the BIN, even so...
