Cancelled bid

Does anyone know about buyers cancelling bids? Why do they not have to contact the seller? Is there any point in raising the issue with Ebay? It has happened to me and the reason given is just a lie, to be frank.

well, people are allowed to cancel bids. and that's that. why should they have to contact the seller?

how long does your auction have left to run?

To do with price, so I know he or she is telling a fib.
Fair enough if buyers are allowed to cancel bids. I didn't know that. Not sure now what the point is of Ebay.

so... you think if people change their mind they should be forced to buy things anyway?

the "point" of ebay is to allow people to bid for items they want.
sometimes those people may change their mind or put in a bid/bid amount accidentally.

I am sure you will have other bidders. it's not the end of the world

It could be that they have just changed their mind, yes. But it could be that they meant to bid 99p and accidentally typed 999, for example. I would feel the same way OP, and would suspect they were fibbing but you have to just let it go really. I think if a member refracts bids too often they get their account suspended or something, if that's any comfort.

you haven';t upset me, i just think it's a strange thing to be so worried about.

you'll hav other bidders, doesn't matter if one of them pulls out.... especially if you still have a few days to run

I did wonder what would happen is a bid were retracted at a late stage. Presumably whoever is lower would then be able to buy at the amount they'd bid? But they might have gone and bid on a similar item and they won't want to end up buying two. It gets a bit complicated. I guess there is nothing to stop us all putting bids in on several identical items and withdrawing them near the end of the sale so we only end up buying one. I'm surprised it's allowed, but there you go.

I have a feeling you can't retract a bid if there are less than X hours to go

(can't remmeber how many hours it is though)

buyers can't cancel a bid in the last 12 hours of the auction

I guess it is annoying if someone cancels a bid, but I would rather they cancelled the bid rather than winning the auction with no intention of paying for it.

I suppose, that is true. Better to back out sooner rather than later. Hey ho. I just haven't used Ebay much and this was only my second sale. I thought I was on a roll .

don't worry, most buyers bid in the last 30 seconds in my experience.

I don't feel good about it but I have done that on one occasion. I changed my mind seconds after I put the bid in. When I retracted it there was a drop down list with a few options on and the only one feasible was that I'd accidentally put in the wrong amount.
