paypal warning money transferred from bank without any permission

received my bank statement on saturday to find paypal have debited my bank account to the tune of £300 pushing me into my overdraft . i have not bought anything since early march , have no ebay fees to pay etc. have not sold anything for £300 ever so can't be a refund . i have not initiated the transfer myself . no email has been sent to say money was being withdrawn . the £300 is sitting as a credit in my paypal account and has not been transfered to anyone else.
contacted bank and paypal immediately bank very helpful , paypal no use at all , can't explain how or why money was transferred .

i've now transferred the money back into my bank account but i am furious and feel i have no choice but to remove my bank account details from paypal . as i know longer feel that paypal is secure if they can just remove money from a bank account without any warning what if it had been £3,000which means i'll probably have to close my paypal account.

any other ideas how to deal with this or am i overacting

First of all DO NOT REMOVE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT FROM PAYPAL - I did this - you cannot then re-add it and they are very unhelpful. May I suggest you change your password on Paypal and report it as a security concern to them and ask them to investigate. They are IME totally bloody useless though.

You are not overreacting.

thanks have changed password and security questions . the bank has cancelled direct debit mandate so they cannot take any money out .i've sent 3 emails but keep getting just a standard reply which does not help in any way . also spent hours on the phone trying to talk to someone but not a hope in hell , the one time i managed to get through i was cut off .

sounds like you are a victim of fraud?

freesias · 22/05/2011 22:26

i thought that until i realised the £300 is actually in my paypal account and has not been transferred on to anyone else .

that sounds really odd. what do paypal say to explain how it happened.

paypal say nothing just send back a standard email . will try and phonr them tomorrow and see if i can get any sense out of them but i'm not overly optimistic .

Maybe it was fraud and they were just checking to see if they could transfer that amount, then they would of gone on and transferred it into their own paypal account using the send money option. I had this a while ago but they started with small amounts of 1p gradually working up to £30 3 times in a month so i noticed that, changed my password and took of all my bank details, you can ring paypal up and ask them to reinstate your bank details if you want them to later on, and they do it straight away.

been on to paypal that seems to be what was happening thankfully locked the account before any money was transferred . as soon as money is back in my account i will close my paypal account as i can't risk this happening again . it's caused real problems as until my salary clears and the £300 goes back into my account in a few days i can't use my bank account as i'm now overdrawn , which is a complete nightmare .
