Can't sell without confirming identity with Bank Details? WTF?!

Have been listing a variety of items this weekend, but have now just had this alert message:

I've been a member of Ebay for 9 years, with 234 100% feedback, and whilst I don't sell a huge amount of things, every couple of months I end up listing 20 or so items after a clear out. I've never had this request before.

Uncomfortable with ebay/paypal having my bank details - they've already got my credit card so WTF do they need more?!

Called Ebay "helpdesk/customer service/whatever" and had a very unhelpful lady tell me that if I've been asked to input those details then I had to do it, and if I didn't then I wouldn't be able to sell, so I said "What, if I don't put my details in I can't sell ever again? and she said "that's right". Hmm. Ridiculous Angry. So I said, well that's a shame, I enjoy using ebay but I guess I won't be able to anymore in that case". I explained that I was uncomfortable hooking up my bank account due to previous fraudulent activity on my Paypal account and she just said "well I'll send you details on how to close your account". Angry.

Anyone else had a similar issue? Any idea why it's come up?

Same here, I just gave my bank details and carried on selling.

Just feel like why should I have to give my bank details as well as my credit card? It's been enough for the last 9 years!

I will admit to being rubbish about tracking my bank acc which is why I'd rather not share it! At least I can spot any dodgy goings on on my cc quite easily

I know what you mean, it is a pita - think it's something to do with EU money laundering legislation. I think I read that somewhere - agree though for longstanding sellers it's actually quite offensive to suddenly question them. I'm new to selling so just gave it up :)
