Thought I had successfully linked my bank account to Paypal, status coming up verified on my account overview page. Had got the 2 small amounts and confirmed them. Got this email tonight: (taken name and number out obviously but the date after the On was blank in the email.
I'm thinking it can't be dodgy as they say to contact the bank and not them. Anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Why would they be trying to transfer from my bank - is this to get the small amounts they put in for verification back again?

Dear,

On , we attempted to transfer from your bank account, ending in (number was here). This transfer was returned by your bank on 13 May 2011 for the reason below:

This is an invalid bank account number.

As a result, this bank account has been disabled from your PayPal account. Please contact your bank for more information or add a new bank account. Please do not contact PayPal because this is entirely an issue between the account holder and their bank.

Yours sincerely,

PayPal

Have you checked your paypal account to see if it is still verified? The email could be a well timed spoof

It still says verified, and the 4 numbers in the email are the last 4 numbers of the account I linked.

Hi,
I had a similar message when setting up, they diabled my account but id added a savings and tried to withdraw money from it to pay for something on ebay which you cant do apparently. I have online banking so i just opened a basic other saving account and added that with paypal, now all my money goes in that 1 and if i ever want to buy anything i make sure i use my debit card and not bank account transfer... you could try ringing paypal and just saying it is the correct account number you had the deposits go in there, that way you will know whether its genuine or not. if you log into your paypal acc at the bottom somewhere you will see a contact us link, click it and follow the instructions, paypal are really good at answering so you wont be on for long.
