I have just listed bil's mobile phone on ebay. it has sold within 30 mins. My problem is the buyer has only joined tonight and obviously has no feed back. Am i being over cautious (from things I've read).

Could be dodgy - when we are listing anything high value/commodity electrical we add a sentence to the listing description stating that any new bidders with 0 feedback will need to be contacted by phone and pay by cheque and should contact us before bidding - so I would contact the bidder and ask them to pay by cheque and verfify their identity by giving you their listed home phone number - could all be for nothing though as they may not win in the end - and often they don't if they are genuine.

We've only had 2 new bidders with 0 feedback win from us - the first was dodgy and never replied to our messages and wasn't on the number given for the bidder and the 2nd time was genuine and quite happy to be contacted.

Send them a message and sound them out - if they win then you can call them and go with your gut instinct but if they're genuine they shouldn't mind you verifying them.

My friends have had hell selling phones on ebay. The bidding can go sky high, they just want your bank account details.

Do you not have the buyers details? There should be a phone number on the details if he is actually the winning bidder. I would wait and see if he is prepared to bid way over what you expected for the phone, then contact ebay.

TheDogsBollocks · 24/03/2011 06:46

sorry my post seems confusing.

You wont have his details UNTIL he is the winning bidder.

Wait and see if he bids in way over the top of waht the phone should go for.

You can contact ebay before the end of the auction if it is getting to ridiculous sums of money.

If he is permanently the winning bidder i.e whatever anyone else bids then his automatically bids higher.

All these are hints that you may be being scammed.

Finally if he is the winning bidder, you will get his details inc phone number you can call him, then wait for the cheque to clear completely before posting.

he has bought it with the BIN.
