i sold my laptop on ebay a week ago, got paid straight away and i asked the buyer to pick up the item in a public pace on thursday.
today i get an email from ebay about payment reversal...

what do i do?? i have no proof of postage...

dodgy things i didnt think about
the buyers address
the fact that the women was far away but she arranged for someone else to pick up
the fact that they both always hid their phone number (but they frgot to do so once so ive got a mobile number now).

any tips on how to deal with this.
many thanks

Im really sorry, if you cannot prove receipt via online tracking you lose the money and the laptop.

Never ever take a PayPal payment for a collection item, this does not happen often but it is a known scam.

Really sorry.

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:33

If you have the address send a recorded delivery letter to it and see if they sign for it. Then use that as the tracking. (I never told you that)

tostaky · 14/02/2011 21:35

noooooo....
what is i go to the police?
i have the mobile phone of the guy and there must be video footage of the exchange on the cctv

that is really really bad.....

You could of course be sending the receipt.

They then could change the dispute to a SNAD.

By the by, the payment could have bounced and only then if you have proof of receipt via online tracking would be covered.

PayPal do not differentiate between a bounced payment or a chargeback.

tostaky · 14/02/2011 21:38

what is a snad?

OP posts:
FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:40

There is nothing you can do how can they catch him with no name or address it is common.

You should inform the police but only when you know why the payment has been reversed, I do think it could be a bounced payment. When did they pay it takes up to ten days for the payment to bounce. Or are they saying unauthorised transaction?

You could have got a receipt from the guy PayPal wouldnt be interested, you have to be able to prove via online tracking the item has been delivered.

and if i send something tomorrow then theres the issue of the dates...
and i would hve to send somethng as heavy as the laptop....

has the payment definitely been reversed? if not contact ebay and ask if there is anything they can do

i think you should go to the police... we can e-mail our non-emergency service, so maybe have a look and see if you can do that? otherwise call the non-emergency number tomorrow. it is technically theft although i suspect it's very hard to prove

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:41

snad = significantly not as described.

PayPal have a forum which I post on, but even they would tell you you are stuck. Real sorry.

tostaky · 14/02/2011 21:42

unauthorised transaction....
thanks for your help
im really gutted...
i would have been more careful usually but DS2 was in intensive care last week and it just happened at the wrong time...

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:42

There is nothing eBay can do not a sausage, the OP cannot prove receipt. The money has gone and so has the laptop.

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:43

It is possible the PayPal account was hacked and they changed the address details before paying.

Really sorry, PayPal are real clear on this, unless you can prove receipt you lose.

Please don't ever take PayPal for a collection item.

I hope it was not a lot of money.

Hope your DS2 is better now.

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:45

Feel free to post on PayPal or the eBay forums but they will tell you the same as me.

tostaky · 14/02/2011 21:46

fabby- if the guy has a mobile phone on a contract then it should be easy for the police to track him down... now if it is payg theres no chance

yesterday - i will def go to the police station tomorrow

OP posts:
FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 21:47

If it is on contract yes, lets hope it is because they can track him from that!

tostaky · 14/02/2011 22:06

ok and i wanted to post a negative feedback on her but for some reasons i have only two coices, either positive feedback or ill post feedback later... do you know why that is?

thank you
ps. DS2 is absoluly fine now, we just had a big scare last week.

OP posts:
FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 22:09

Sellers cannot leave negative feedback.

You cannot leave a false positive either.

Don't leave any feedback.

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 22:10

Once the reversal is complete and the item shows as requiring paying for again file a non payment dispute.

Citing payment reversed in the body of the text when you can.

tostaky · 14/02/2011 22:25

grrr... i am very angry with myself, i though i was being clever using paypal on ebay as opposed to selling it on gumtree....(where i listed the laptop a few weeks ago and got lots of interesting scam emails)

i think i will lodge two complaints tomorrow
one against the guy
and one against paypal for misleading advertising ( they do say they are safe etc... but you have to go to three pages to find out exactly the conditions of the protection)

OP posts:
tostaky · 14/02/2011 22:26

ok i will do that as well, many thanks Fabby

PayPals User Agreement is real clear. Unfortunately when you list on eBay unless you list in Motors you have to offer PayPal.

It's a pita.

Sorry you got conned.

tostaky · 22/02/2011 14:42

Fabbychic - howdo i file a non payment dispute??

police said yes it is theft but the value is too low so they wont do anything.... grrr...

OP posts:
FabbyChic · 22/02/2011 17:42

Go to the resolution centre, you can only file it if the payment has now been reversed and the item shows as requiring payment.

tostaky · 22/02/2011 21:40

i cant bc a " refund has been made..."

thanks anyway
