I sold a phone on ebay tonight and recieved this email. Is this standard practice now or is this guy being really cheeky

Hi Starshaker,

We protect ourselves from sellers who cash in and vanish over night.
You may have seen the No longer a registered user notification before (even with over 50,000 positive feedback):

All we require is £0.01 (pence) payment (will be refunded) prior to sending you the payment. This would help us get a confirmation from Paypal that the seller's address is verified. We had numerous instances where we didn't get anything in the post & Paypal failed to get our monies back, hence the pre-caution.

Please log in to your Paypal and send 0.01 as GOODs to:

Payment will be sent to same email.

Never heard of this, I wouldn't do it though.

Changeisagoodthing · 13/02/2011 20:52

It's a scam. They won't buy your phone

pantaloons · 13/02/2011 20:52

I'd forward the message to ebay. My feedback is in the thousands and I've never had anything like that.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/02/2011 20:54

Have never heard of this. Would contact eBay if I were you.

happyinherts · 13/02/2011 20:54

Doesn't seem right to me, and not even logical.

Ebay is built up on trust and whilst I am sure there are fraudulent transactions, the majority of buyers and sellers are honest and straightforward.

You are not obligated at all to send 1p. It's not part of the rules. Made up by buyer on his terms. I'm sure there'd be other buyers for your phone so issue it again as a re-listing that buyer made his own terms of payment up, and tell buyer no, you're not jumping to his tune.

starshaker · 13/02/2011 21:38

I have emailed ebay and am waiting for them to get back to me

Dont do it, they want your PayPal details by sending them 1p you will give them to them, then they will send you a payment notification from PayPal saying send the stuff and input the tracking and your money will be released.

It's a scam
