I have a similar question....I've only ever paid by papypal....clicked on pay be credit card...and nothing...is it because I need to add a credit card to my account...do they just then take the money automatically?

Dont do it that way, when you go to make a payment via eBay checkout you get the option to change the funding source, PayPal funds are always used first, then your secondary funding source, if you have no PayPal funds just changing your funding source from your bank account to your card.

When you click pay now, top centre it tells you how your payment is funded there is a clickable link underneath which you can click to change the funding source just click and change it to your preferred card.

I wasn't able to change to my prefered card...that's what's odd.

And if I click on pay now on the email ebay sent, it says check out completed. I've asked the seller to invoice me, so I can pay by paypal instead.

Go to your My eBay, find the won item click pay now, at the top right next to how you are paying it cleary states (CHANGE FUNDING SOURCE)

It jsut says "You have already completed checkout for this item".

Nothing about how I am paying, apart from;Payment details
Credit card
Credit card

Ah ha! The printable version says I have to contact the seller to pay with card.

if you have already completed checkout then you have already paid.

paying direct not via PayPal will not offer you the same protection, proceed at your peril.
