Am I right in thinking you can say Cash on collection in your listing?

I'm selling an item which is a fair bit of money. I had an unfortunate situation a few months ago where I was left out of pocket due to something that wasn't may fault so I am now very warying of selling on ebay.

To minimise the chances of there being a problem I have put collection in person only, however I know that there is the paypal scam where people can claim their money back by claiming they never got the item even though they have collected it. So I am only going to accept cash on collection.

Can you put this in the listing, I thought I had heard that this wasn't allowed. Also if someone does pay with paypal I was planning on explaining to them why I won't accept paypal for a collection item. Obviously if they then want to withdraw that is fine, but will they be able to leave me a neg?

Just realised I got my thread title wrong. It should say Am I right in thinking you can't say cash on collection in your listing.

yes you can say cash on collection, but by ebay rules you have to accept paypal if they wish to pay that way. I would personally go ahead with the you have planned, and if worse comes to worse you may get a neg, but a red dot is better than losing your money (and item)
It should be fine though

sorry to hijack but i was wondering that if you offer paypal, cheque and postal order can you detail that paypal payment is only accepted if the item is posted, but that cheque / PO / cash for collection only?

that way you're still offering paypal as an option but not if they want to collect?

does my question make sense? Smile

You will have to have paypal as one of the payment options.

You can put cash on collection only in your text. No-one at eBay will be aware unless someone complains about your listing (unlikely) - they don't review every item.

I have sold various items for collection inc toy kitchen, playhouse, fridge etc. No genuine buyer has ever had a problem with paying cash. When I sold my fridge the guy payed by paypal and I refunded this and emailed him explaining why I would prefer cash on collection. He was totally fine with this.

We recently bought an electric guitar ourselves. The seller told us he would prefer cash on collection. It would have been marginally better for us to pay by paypal as we had a high balance on a paypal account due to me having had a handbag cull, but as genuine buyers we understood and paid cash.

I would suggest that you put down timescales too, ie; I have just sold a heavy item collection only, prefer cash on collection etc, but with the PP option too. I sold it on the 20th and they haven't contacted me despite invoicing them and last night emailing them. Get them to contact you within a set number of days etc on your listing.

Also, I couldn't officially put down free postage or nil postage etc so put a huge amount down but it wouldn't let me get rid of the postage 'cost' on the invoice. Very annoying!
