I have just received this message:

I am so sorry but my paypal is messed up and taking money from a bank account I cannot withdraw from without putting me in the red. So please refuse the purchase. I am so sorry for this :(

I am especially miffed because I got a really good price for the item in question!! What should I do next?

Thanks!

ask them to send you a postal order, if they refuse then you know they are trying it on. They have 5 days to pay so you could offer to wait until next week to add funds into the account. Again if they refuse they clearly have buyers remorse.

You can offer to let them pay for it via postal order or, if they're close enough, to pay cash and collect it or offer to wait for payment until they have sorted their banking/paypal problems.

Or you cancel the bid. I've not done this before but there will be pretty clear instructions on the buyers section.

if you offer to cancel the transaction and they do not agree to it you do not get your fees back, dh has been stung like this many times - buyer asks to pull out and then won't accept the transaction request and he loses out Angry

Thanks! I will suggest the postal order and take it from there. I am very new to selling on eBay so your comments are much appreciated!

I haven't heard from his yet.

The next highest bidder was quite near his bid - would it be ok if I offered the item in question to the second highest bidder using the second chance offer thing? Or is that not the way to do it?

Thanks again!
