Holiday setback after comment about portion size

ArwenUndomniel · Yesterday 21:19

I'm away on holiday at moment. Was trying really hard to just eat normally, not restrict or overeat, and not let food dominate the whole bloody experience for once. I was sort of managing it when someone else from the tour group commented on my portion size at dinner this evening. Now I don't want to eat in front of other people for the rest of the trip (just over a week to go) and I just want to go home where I can eat or not eat what I want in private. I need to stop spiralling but I'm already trying to work out how little I can get away with eating until I can get back home.

I’m sorry someone was so tactless.

Dont let one thoughtless comment ruin your holiday, stay strong and keep going.

The ED will love any excuse to restrict food so don’t let it bully you.

I was telling myself "Nobody is watching how much you're eating or judging you for it", and then it turned out that they were. I feel like I must have really made a pig of myself for somebody to have noticed like that.

Try to remember that you are allowed food. You deserve to eat . You deserve to eat what you want in however size you want. The eating disorder is not in charge.
If you are brave enough next time anyone makes a comment say " oh I have hypermetabolic syndrome so this is just snack to my body".
My dad has had severe anorexia for 7 yrs ..now in strong recovery but she still gets thrown by remarks like you got.
You sound like you are working really hard to have the life you want and deserve so tell the eating disorder to "feck off" . Your on holiday from it!
And try to go to the next meal...don't hide away...one bad meal doesn't have to ruin all the work you've put in to get were you are.
Sending you lots of strength

Not my dad....my DD 😭

So sorry someone was so thoughtless.

Try see it as their problem, their misjudgement, not yours. It doesn't mean you made a pig of yourself, or that everyone is watching and judging, it means they can't mind their own business.

You're doing so well to be trying this adventure, this is just what my own DD is aiming for and we're determined the ED won't stop it. You're strong to have got so far, you are strong enough to get past this comment.

Sending support

Tonight two different people were having a conversation about how little they can eat and doing that thing where they justify having dinner by saying they've not eaten all day. But they're still not having pudding because that would be greedy
I'm not going to go to any more of the group meals. It's basically making me feel like a fat greedy pig for eating anything.

Sounds like they are the ones with a problem. Eating is not a competition. Is it buffet style meals? What type of holiday is it?

ArwenUndomniel · Today 20:40

It's a group tour, but the accommodation is remote safari lodges so you have to eat dinner there because there's no restaurants nearby, and it's buffet style. I'm just going to not go for the rest of the trip - it's only three more nights anyway. I'd already stopped going to breakfast for the same reason.

Can you not just time it to avoid them or sit elsewhere? You can’t just not eat at all. Even if you say you are feeling delicate then change subject. Fwiw we found a safari group particularly difficult socially, there was always someone being outspoken or plain rude and everyone was tired and tetchy by the end.
