Organise and planing with Egg donor

Hi everyone.
I’m 49 and considering donor egg treatment outside the U.K. after a failed IVF cycle a few years ago.

When I previously had treatment in the Czech Republic, I had to travel at very short notice once my period started, which was quite stressful.
I struggled to arrange flights and accommodation quickly, and as I can only take time off during school holidays, it was also very expensive.

I’m hoping to have treatment around September and would really appreciate hearing how far in advance you contacted your clinic and organised everything.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences (and adventures!). 💛

If you had to travel at very short notice once your period started does that mean you had scans etc in the Czech Republic.
I've done many rounds of IVF and even when using a clinic abroad usually had monitoring scans in the UK. The last 3 FETS I've had I travelled a day or 2 before transfer (transfer was usually around cycle day 17).

Whenever you're going check that there are regular flights from a convenient airport. I saw clinics in the Czech Republic and Greece and Cyprus that all looked good but travel would have been complicated. I had treatment in Spain, although not only for ease of travel, I happen to think the clinics are generally very good.

Could you ask to be put on something to regulate your cycle so you'd know when your period was coming? Like the pill or norethisterone? I was similiar to you. V unpredictable cycles making planning travel to Prague with a small child to take care of at home tricky but regulating my cycle in advance meant I knew when it would come and got my cycle in sync with donors so we could do a fresh transfer. First time we used norethisterone and second I was on pill for a two months prior to the cycle as my body hated the norethisterone. Currently 30 weeks with that embryo.

Thank you for your comment @Ukelelesolo. Yes, it was quite a hustle to go to Czech in such a short time and I should have had the ultrasound in the UK instead of traveling to Czech.
So far, I’ve found a clinic in Portugal that I’m interested in. but it takes about two hours to get there from the nearest airport, so I think it’s important to consider accessibility.

@ThatAmpleJadeHelper I understand the importance of syncing the cycle for a fresh transfer. I’ve taken norethisterone before when I was younger and it worked well, but when I recently tried it again, I strangely felt quite sick.
Still, thank you for your suggestion. Good luck with your embryo transfer 😊

Hello. My cycle was also regulated but with Yazmin- contraception pills. Otherwise, it was very irregular, so I would have had no idea of when my cycle might start. I did the treatment in Prague.

Hi @GingerFox2021.Thank you for your infomation about Yazmin. I never heard the pills but I will be checking it out!

@Chita77 If you're interested in Portugal, maybe look at Ginemed Lisbon. Much closer to airport so very easy to access.

Chita77 · 16/03/2026 17:26

@Sara237 Thank you for your infomation! I found few intresting clinic but they are all far from air ports but if it's Lisbon, it would be very helpful.

@Chita77 Yes quick taxi from airport. I recommend them. Had embryo transfer and only visited once for it. Tests and scans in UK. Online calls etc. Good luck. Portugal is great as ethical due to open ID so more in liv8e with UK regarding ethics.
