Donor eggs - how many made it to blast?

Hi all
Had donor egg cycle (abroad) last year. 10 eggs, 9 fertilised, 3 made it to blastocyst. I had 3 singles transfers (1 X fresh, 2 x frozen), all negative.
Started again with a new donor, and found out this morning that we have 6 fertilised.. I know it only takes one but I'm really disappointed. Based on our 'stats' from last year, it's a cica 33% success rate of fertilised to blast...so not holding out a huge amount of hope. I would be interested to hear from others - how many fertilised made it to blast? Thanks x

I think we had slightly better than 50% fertilised to blast.
The thing about the statistics though is that they only tell you what worked for someone else.
Had you done own egg IVF before moving to donor eggs?
With my own eggs I did get good fertilisation rates but they usually dropped off before day 5.
The wait for news is still nerve-wracking but hopefully in a few days you'll have some good news. Are you planning a fresh transfer or FET?

Thanka for your reply. Yes did 2 rounds of own egg IVF several years ago. I had a decent number of eggs (8 both times I think), then 2 embryos at day 3 (clinic opted to put them back before day 5 saying they had a better chance back in... although obviously didn't work). I completely get your point about statistics - I suppose I'm asking specifically about donor stats as most donors are on average younger and screened more than ladies doing own egg IVF. I will be doing a FET

Well my donor egg FET worked after a lot of unsuccessful own egg treatment.
I hope you will be able to say the same.

From memory

4 eggs
4 fertilised
0 blasts
Double transfer - Negative cycle

9 eggs
5 fertilised
0 blasts
Double transfer - Negative cycle

8 eggs
6 fertilised
4 blasts
Double transfer - Singleton live birth

Thanks for sharing, glad it finally worked for you. This is very likely to be our final cycle. I'm finding it hard to stay positive!! I did single transfers on my first DE cycle. Think we will go double this time if we get 2 or more.

I don't think I was even able to stay positive after a certain point, don't worry if you can't, just do what you need to do as you prepare for FET.

I think it's fairly normal to lose 1/3 to 1/2 at each step, eg if 7 of 10 fertilise, you'll get 4 or 5 blastocysts etc

the whole thing is just hugely depressing and frustrating isn't it, but i think you're doing the right thing using donor eggs, the age of the eggs is far more important than any of the other stuff it's easy to stress about. Good lucj

@Sorrento79 we got 3 blasts, but they are good quality. 2 are AA, 1 is BB. I had a transfer of 1 of the AAs last week so currently waiting. It's so difficult!!

I used my own eggs (but I was 31 and had no fertility problems).
Out of 15 eggs, 6 became blasts (can't remember how many were fertilised as it was years ago), one only on day 6.
Had 3 SET and all worked - DC3 due in a few weeks.
I was told that my results were good, but you are making me doubt this! Not that it matters to me now.
Good luck, as you say it only takes one.....

Lily0719 · 09/08/2023 22:06

I was 37 and had 14 eggs, 11 fertilised and 7 made it to blast. Have transferred 3 singles and have one child from one of them.

@Hopeful2024 how are you doing? How was your DE journey in the end?

Hopeful2024 · 25/10/2024 22:12

@GingerFox2021 hi. Doing great thanks. My FET in August was successful and I have a beautiful baby boy sleeping upstairs. It took us a decade to get him but he's so worth it!
