How many vials do you need for IVF?

My clinic has recommended 2 sperm donor vials. This is likely to be my only cycle due to financial constraints so seems a bit wasteful to have buy an extra vial that I'll likely have to trash afterwards. Is 1 OK or better to have a back up just in case?

How much does a vial cost? Why do they recommend two and are they from the same donor?
If there was an issue with one vial would it mean that your eggs go to waste? (and all the money spent on meds and egg collection)
What kind of issues do they think could happen? You need more info from them to make an informed decision.
Someone more experienced may be able to help too, I'm here for donor eggs rather than sperm so no direct knowledge of the process.

Agree with pp that you really need to ask your clinic why they recommend this, it's not a common practice as far as I know. Only thing I can think of is perhaps the clinic are finding they have been having quality problems with donations from your chosen sperm bank, and so will need to use two vials (from the same sperm donor) in one cycle. I can't see them trashing/wasting the 2nd vial - it's too valueble.

@bigbluesea my clinic also recommended 2 vials. They said it was in case the sperm didn't thaw properly but it didn't seem like it was something that happened often. I got 2 so I had a back up just in case but they didn't need to use it so it's currently in my clinic's freezer until I decide to use it for a sibling or tell them to dispose of it.

Thanks @ingkir, my clinic have now said 1 is fine although now I'm worried about not having a back up!
