My wife and I had many failed IVF cycles and miscarriages over a 10 year period and eventually had success 4 years ago with the birth of a gorgeous daughter. We had remaining embryos which were retained frozen in a clinic in Barbados and were intending to try another cycle to give our daughter a sibling.
Unfortunately due to various issues, we feel unable to go forward with another pregnancy. Although we have considered surrogacy, we don't have the financial resources to support a host. There are other reasons I won't go into now why it's unlikely we would be able to go through with the subsequent adoption. So the choices we have are:-
- to continue to find the money to store the embryos
- to abandon the storage and dispose of the embryos
- to donate the embryos to research
- to donate the embryos anonymously
- to donate the embryos and retain knowledge of the recipient
It's a difficult choice and has been causing us significant debate. What are the rules regarding embryo donation in the UK from overseas storage? Can anyone help us with this difficult decision?
