Hi there,

I'm very new to the world of donor conception but I have been thinking about how I want my life to progress over the next 5-10 years and I have a growing interest in extending my family through donor conception in a single parent family. I have one DD at the moment who has just turned 7.

I have read through the forums and I'm still a little bit confused (tbh also slightly overwhelmed) as this is all very new to me. I would like to do this by anonymous donor, and have heard about the clinics overseas where you can order donor sperm and self administer.

What are peoples experiences of this? Is there a high success rate of it working? I am fertile but it took 10 months of stressfully trying to conceive with DD1. Also, how much on average has this process cost them?

Oh and also, is miscarriage rate any higher with IUI?

Hi, I have a 19 month old ds, conceived via IUI. This was funded by our primary care trust as we didn't have any other children. It worked 3rd time. We've recently gone through it again, through the same NHS Hospital, but this time, as we already have our ds, it cost £430 a go, unmediated. I can only speak about the NHS process, and we're in Scotland, which I know is slightly different from the rest of the UK. The Hospital matched us with a donor, although we were on a waiting list for a year due to donor shortage up here. Lots of luck!!

My understanding is that if you are in the UK you can't (legally) buy sperm from anywhere and self-administer - you have to go through a licenced clinic.

I'm not sure about self administering but I have a 7 week old ds born as a result of a medicated iui with donor sperm. I went to a clinic which I would recommend as they can check your current fertility and therefore make sure that iui is right for you. At my initial appt I was told that due to my age (37 at the time) I would likely need ivf to increase my chances. I was lucky enough that all my tests showed I could do the cheaper option of iui. It took three rounds of medication to be successful. Round 1 I had one follicle but was unsuccessful. Round 2 I had three large follicles but my clinic wouldn't proceed due to the multiples risk. Round 3 I had one large and one small follicle and was successful. Each time the procedure went ahead it cost £850 + meds. Unfortunately they don't allow iui or ivf on the nhs around here,
