Coping with divorce while living together... feeling broken

Any advice as to how to cope. Married 15 years with kids. During this time I've felt very alone, unloved, unsupported and overwhelmed with everything. I felt like I didn't exist. I asked for help and assistance with managing our lives as it was mostly left to me but I got no help. Just a sense from him that I am not doing a good enough job of managing it all. We've had money issues and when I've asked him to see if he can get a better paid job it was met with more contempt and a refusal to consider my request. I've had to remortgage our house to cover bills. I've worked part time whilst also looking after 3 kids. I've now just gone full time. He doesn't help with much at home other than mowing the lawn. I've been so stressed and depressed and it's become worse and worse. I told him I felt unloved by him, but nothing changed. Don't get me wrong I'm not perfect and have said things i regret but its always after I try to raise an issue and it gets deflected or denied, then I get annoyed and can start shouting as I just don't feel heard. After an argument between us at the beginning of this year he has not really spoken to me since. After 6 months of this I reluctantly filed for divorce. Since then the silent treatment has continued and I've been accused of being a bully, financial abuse. He's criticised my parenting constantly. He won't move out and said he is going 50/50 custody when I have always been the main carer and work term time around the kids school days. I feel sick every day that he is building a case against me to take the kids away from me. He is not completing the divorce paperwork and I've been waiting 2 months to exchange form e. I still love him and just want him to love me and see me. But he seems to hate me. I blame myself every day. I don't know how I can carry on living in this environment. I feel like I'm getting alienated from the kids by the way I'm spoken to and other subtle ways like not involving himself in much disciplining. So the kids then see me as the horrible one and not him. I can't go for an occupation order as I've been told emotional abuse is hard to prove. I have no family to go to. I can't put it in to words but I feel at the end of my tether and like he is going to ruin me. I've been to women's aid but they can't really help either other than tell me it is emotional abuse. I constantly blame myself and think maybe he is like this because of how I've treated him. But I've only ever felt alone and depressed and although I may have not said the right things in the past I've only ever wanted to resolve issues and make our marriage work.

I'm constantly questioning if I'm to blame and deserve what is happening to me

Can Women's Aid help you move out with the children? That would probably help you start to rebuild your life away from your horrible husband.

Womens aid have mentioned this but I know that my kids will not want to come with me. My eldest is 12 and already saying she hates me and wants to live with her dad when we divorce. He sleeps in their rooms and has been for 9 months now so i feel I'm being pushed away and he is getting closer and closer to them. I've heard her slating me to him for doing things like set limits on her phone use etc, and he says nothing. I have heard her saying she hates me and I should die. He said nothing. I've heard him slating me to them in a recording one of them took on their ipad. He's never been this bad over the years. I've just felt very alone and emotionally starved. But I still question if I expected too much and over thought it all. I did also have post natal depression so maybe I didn't see things straight. I feel like my life is a mess and I'm hanging on by a thread

I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds unbearable. I have a 5yo DD and I am the one who has to set all the boundaries and I feel like I'm heading the same direction with my partner. I feel like he hates me yet I'm doing the majority of the housework and childcare whilst still working full time. I don't earn much but I'm trying hard to save so I can buy my own place in maybe 5 years. I think for the moment I'm just going to try and live as separate a life as possible.

painthisbathroom · 27/09/2026 05:06

Sorry, posted that too soon. I'm not sure what you can do to get the children on your side, it sounds like an impossible situation with him badmouthing you. Do you think you can try to explain your side of it to them? Would they listen? Have you looked into any type of counselling? Maybe talking it through with someone would help you find a way to work through it and help you feel stronger? Sending hugs x

Probably not what you want to hear but if he wants 50/50 let him have it, and if the kids want to stay with him let them stay. He and the kids will soon realise you’re the stable backbone and backtrack.

in the meantime work on getting your life back. Do the household chores that are absolutely necessary and go out with your friends and start to enjoy. Let his 50/50 parenting start from now.

my sister’s husband pulled this same rubbish. He couldn’t even handle the first week of the school run, social services were alerted after the children were late everyday and looked unkempt. Meanwhile, my family paid for my sister to go on holiday for a week

I’m sorry you’re going through this @Georgia36 it sounds so difficult.

I haven’t experienced this myself but I have gone through a divorce and felt pain like no other knowing my family unit was breaking up and life as I knew it was going to be different.

I agree with @GoldenGirl85 he will soon work out he can’t actually be a dad 50/50 or full time. Now is the time to build your confidence - you are strong enough to leave him, you are a good mum and you are worthy of having an amazing life. Repeat those mantras in your head constantly. Why? Because they’re true, and you need to start believing that. It may be hard, fucking difficult at times, but I promise your life will be better without this man in it.

Hopefully someone has more practical advice on how to get out of this marriage and keep your children safe from the abuse. I do follow a lady called Jess on insta who covers emotional abuse, parent alienation etc she’s worth a follow to educate you on what your H is saying to you and your DC.

50:50 is not taking the kids away from you. He’s their dad and it’s not necessarily unreasonable

however, I think you need to try to disengage.

do you have a solicitor?
is there a trusted friend to help support you ?

try not to get the children involved however hard. It shouldn’t ever be about getting them on your side. They are vulnerable and this is a particularly stressful time for them. Just reassure them that you understand. You’d likely be having a lot of battles at this stage of their lives regardless of the divorce.

unfortunately divorce and settlement can take a very long time if one party is uncooperative. So you have to build up your resilience however you can.

do you need form e? If you already have a good sense of finances throughout the marriage it may not be necessary.

has he got a solicitor?

have you researched and read all
You can online about divorce process and principles of settlement? Trying to simply remain fact based and in emotional might help

get time out if the house. He wants 50:50 so that starts now. Today. He can cook and clean and run them around half the week which gives you time to go out .

redfishcat · 27/09/2026 09:23

Agree with others, 50:50 starts today.
Do not bail him out, and do not let him feed the kids from your food.
they will soon see the truth, or a miracle will happen and he will step up and actually parent his kids

You need to move out, make a life for yourself and children
