Planning to split way in advance - workable or not?

Have you/are you living with a husband/wife but have a joint plan to split when your youngest DC hits a certain age (e.g. 16 or 18)? Of so, how does it work day to day? Is it possible to do this and have a happy enough day to day life? For me it'd mean just under 4 years of doing this...if it ended up being our preferred way to go. We have a great day to day life and get on fine. We both prioritise our child and home life. We just aren't each others' romantic companion, struggle for deeper connection, and I think we worry once child rearing is done we wont be great as just us.

I think a lot of people probably do this unofficially, the issue is if one of you is wanting romantic companionship with someone else and that can of worms gets opened.

Yes I agree that I think a lot of people do this. I'd be interested to hear how it works, if it does, day to day. IMO it is different to opening up the marriage (ie allowing each other to sleep with other people) because its not trying to keep things alive, its just accepting the marriage will run its course to a kind of agreed timetable.
