I was on tbe coast yesterday & noticed a woman who had been sitting in the same spot for several hours & now when the sun had set.

I asked her if everything was OK and her response was 'not really'

She wasnt very responsive to any questions but gradually she opened up.

He husband had told her that she had to leave their (rented) properry as he thinks that she is bad for their 15 yr old neurodivergents daughters welfare. The woman admitted that the marriage was in trouble for a while & she has experienced mental health issue recently.

We talked until midnight & I asked where she would spend the night & she replied she would just rough sleep. I live 70 miles away offered my spare room which in the end she accepted.

We drove back & after tea went to sleep.

She does have relatives in the town but are on holiday. I've said she can stay the weekend But I sense she doesnt want to face the issues coming up.

Any advice on actions?

You do absolutely nothing

Backtobroc · 18/07/2026 15:12

During your chat until midnight… what did she say beyond the scant detail here?

Backtobroc · 18/07/2026 15:15

You are a man…. So tread very carefully here. You should drive her back to her hometown

SoScarletItWas · 18/07/2026 15:16

I’d have put her in the Premier Inn for the night. And if you are male as per your username, she was mad going 70 miles from home with someone she doesn’t know.

You take her back (tomorrow if you must) and that’s it; you’ve already done more than was needed.

She shouldn’t leave the marital home so readily. Husband doesn’t get to kick her out. You haven’t said there was abuse or she was in danger.

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/07/2026 15:17

I honestly don’t know what to say. You drove a mentally ill woman 70 miles from her family to your actual home.

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/07/2026 15:18

You haven’t said there was abuse or she was in danger.

Conversely the woman’s husband accuses her of abuse, or at least being damaging to their child. And she admits she’s been unstable.

So drop her back to her hometown.

And the Op is a man

SoScarletItWas · 18/07/2026 15:34

So where is she now OP?

Backtobroc · 18/07/2026 16:18

This Op won’t be back

I am a little concerned about this woman tbh

MisterT373 · 18/07/2026 21:01

She is still with me. Im trying to get her to speak with friends/relatives so she has somewhere decent to stay when I drop her back tomorrow.

She is very fragile and Im doing my best to help but she needs professional help.

For those that think my behaviour was reckless I see your point but it seemed a decent optiion

What she doesn’t need is a lone man driving her to his home, 70 miles away, and having her stay for the weekend
