My husband left our house (no mortgage) but asked to keep this house as his postal address. I dont actually know where he is living. He was paying his share of the council tax but i got a voters form today from the council and wondered if i should change both this and council tax to show hes no longer living here or does it not make a difference.

You get single person’s discount (25 per cent cheaper) if he’s off the register. But you can’t use it as his postal address and claim the discount

Dreamlava · 31/01/2026 17:33

How peculiar
He doesn’t live at your property so it’s sketchy that he wants to use your address still

Arlanymor · 31/01/2026 17:35

Tell him to get a PO Box and then claim the 25% discount as a single resident.

ifonlyitwasreal · 31/01/2026 18:02

God know he could be taking out credit cards to the address etc.

LadyLapsang · 02/02/2026 00:02

Odd. Do you think he is living with someone who is claiming means tested benefits so doesn’t want to be linked to that property, or to someone going through a divorce who doesn’t want their settlement to show they have a live in partner? You should read the electoral guidance so you don’t make an incorrect statement about the electoral roll. Rules for Council Tax and the Electoral Roll are different.

Rayqueen2026 · 02/02/2026 00:05

I wouldn't have let me ex use the address once he is gone he's gone plus any benefit help wouldn't have happened etc if I had kept him on

Dreamlava · 02/02/2026 06:51

It will be for a sketchy reason. No doubt on both sides

plentyofsunshine · 02/02/2026 08:09

Ask him why he wants to keep your house as his postal address

Friendlygingercat · 16/03/2026 13:45

I would ring the CT people and inform them that your husband has left and you are now single and want the discount. Contact the council and ask them to remove his name from the electoral register which is what the local authority use when they are checking up on single occupiers. If you are not on the electoral roll then you are not officially "there". You could also return all his mail as GONE AWAY (which he has). You dont owe him any favours.
